Student journalists from various diocesan schools across Negros Oriental, together with editorial board and staff members and delegates from the colleges and basic education departments of COSCA, gathered for the opening day of the 2nd Campus Journalism Bootcamp Series at the Mere Maria Open Hall, St. Paul University Dumaguete, on September 16.
With the theme “Journalism in the Digital Age: Ringing Truth to Power,” student journalists and other bootcamp participants had the opportunity to learn from seasoned journalists through a series of talks and workshops. Kaye Brier, the first transgender woman journalist in the Southern Philippines, led a session on news writing, sharing insights on responsible and effective journalism in the digital age.
Kean Bagaipo, a seasoned journalist, facilitated a comprehensive session and workshop on copyreading and headline writing, equipping participants with essential skills in editing and crafting compelling headlines. Meanwhile, Lysander Kendrick Tiu, associate editor of The Weekly Sillimanian, delivered an insightful and meaningful discussion and workshop on sports writing, highlighting the fundamentals of covering and writing sports stories.
The bootcamp aims to help pave the way for more responsible, critical, and truth-driven student journalists in the digital age through comprehensive sessions and hands-on workshops led by seasoned journalists based in Dumaguete.
